| Single Family Remodel & Addition, San Francisco, CA
This project was a speculative development involving alterations and addition to a modest two-bedroom home.
The interior was modified to create a Home Office in the area of the existing kitchen, the conversion of an existing bedroom to the Kitchen, and a three-story addition to the rear of the building.
The addition consists of a Master Suite and adjacent Bedroom on the lowest level, a Living/Dining room and roof deck with views of downtown San Francisco on the middle level, and a tiny "crow's nest" Loft on the upper level.
The rear addition, structurally isolated from the existing house, provided the designers with an opportunity to contrast volumes as the small, existing house on the street side is a prelude to the larger areas at the rear. The house unfolds from modest rooms to open spaces with a commanding city panorama.
"The eyes lead you where the feet don't go."
This quality lies, at a large scale, in a playful crossing of spaces. From several areas interesting vistas appear that are unrelated to circulation patterns. Elements present themselves briefly and disappear into another space. A spiral stair hovers over a stairwell void below. A light, steel catwalk connects the stairs to the Loft. Rounding a corner, the small room opens to a window wall, offering a dramatic view of downtown San Francisco.
