Single Family Residence, San Francisco, CA

The existing residence was built at street level on a steep downsloping lot.  The underside of the building was dark and unpleasant and under utilized for the growing family so it was decided to capture the space for for a bedroom level.  The design intent was to connect the new level with the existing living spaces in a very open manner so that it does not feel like a basement. Open stairs and railings, a dramatic two story space and glazed openings achieve the desired effect.
